Turn your home into a yoga studio!

Isolation has got us all trying new things, whether that be a new morning routine, baking some banana bread or even trying some new exercises! A lot of people have used this time to discover the benefits of yoga and how it is a perfect at-home workout.  

Yoga requires very minimal equipment and is relatively slow-paced but helps you to build strength and resilience, so it’s a perfect workout for this time at home.  

You may be looking around your living room and thinking “where do I start?!” which is why we’re here. Keep on reading to see how you can practice yoga at home!  

1. Get the essentials  

To start, you will need an open space. If you have a spot, just move any obstacles like tables and chairs out of the way so you have space to stretch and move. You will also need to get a yoga mat if you don’t already have one, there are a lot of online retailers that are still distributing these. If you can’t access a mat, try a soft surface instead.  

2. Create a relaxing atmosphere  

Pick a time that you want to connect with yourself, typically this is either first thing in the morning to kickstart your day or early evening to prepare winding down for the night. Then create a nice atmosphere, maybe light some candles or whatever you have access to that makes you feel relaxed. Try and minimise distractions as much as possible! 3. Select what type of yoga is for you  

If you’re new to yoga, you will be happy to know that there are different types of yoga-based both on your needs and ability. You won’t have to dive into the deep end straight away if you don’t want to! A quick Google search can show you the different types of yoga and the breakdowns of what they provide, if you’re looking for an active and intense yoga activity then maybe try Vinyasa yoga. If you want a more slow-paced introduction to yoga, maybe try restorative yoga as this focuses on body relaxation.

4. Give it a go

Once you have all this sorted, you should be ready to start your first yoga session. There are tons of great YouTube channels that have yoga tutorials and guides that you can follow, so just search for your selected yoga type and see what you find! Give a few videos a watch and get a feel for what you like and then all that’s left is to give it a go. Don’t be disheartened if you struggle at first, it’s all a learning curve!
